In response to the growing impact of OER adoption in SUNY, the Open SUNY Textbook (OST) project now offers SUNY OER Services, a business model to support faculty adoption of OER that can be easily integrated into a campus Learning Management System (LMS). The new sustainable model includes the continuation of developing low cost learning materials for SUNY students, while providing a financial model that any SUNY campus can easily join.

Tompkins Cortland Community College logo

Five SUNY community colleges, led by Monroe Community College, were awarded an Achieving the Dream Open Educational Resources Degree Initiative grant to create six full degree programs offering only OER. The campuses and degree programs are: TC3, Business Administration (A.S.); Monroe, Liberal Arts Biology (A.S.); Mohawk Valley, Criminal Justice (A.S.); Herkimer, Liberal Arts and Sciences - General Studies (A.A.); Clinton, Computer Information Systems (A.A.S.). Clinton and Herkimer are collaborating on a sixth program in Health Services Management Technology (A.A.S.). The duration of the grant is 31 months, ending December 31, 2018.

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are providing global access to higher education. Empire State College was among the first colleges in the country to offer a global MOOC. There are currently seven SUNY MOOCs running on the Coursera platform covering the topics of: non-profits, metaliteracy, elearning, and computational arts.

The SUNY Office of Applied Learning

has released two open courses: SUNY Professional Skills Career Launch for All Majors and SUNY Professional Skills Career Launch for Engineers. The curriculum is designed to develop critical thinkers with theoretic and tactical skills, communication and interpersonal skills, and work place ready interactive skills through self-paced online instruction, assessment, assignments and evaluation.
